ISLAMABAD, Jan 30, 2024 (BSS/AFP) – In a highly debated case linked to a leaked document, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, as confirmed by state media and a spokesperson for his party. This verdict comes just before the upcoming elections on February 8.

The sentencing was delivered after a trial conducted within the jail where Khan has been held since his arrest in August. The spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party stated, “Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and PTI Vice-President Shah Mahmood Qureshi have both been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the cypher case.”

The case revolves around the handling of a “cypher” sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States. The cypher alleged that the United States was involved in a conspiracy to remove Khan from office in 2022.

With the elections just around the corner, millions of voters are set to cast their ballots in less than two weeks. However, the campaign has been plagued with accusations of pre-vote rigging, and Khan’s party has faced significant suppression.
