Medical Expert Stresses Importance of Awareness Drives for Controlling Obesity and Diabetes

A recent Gallup survey has revealed that an increasing number of people believe that activities related to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as outdoor activities and exercise, are “not important at all” for one’s health. This shift in attitude is alarming, especially considering the detrimental effects that obesity and diabetes can have on an individual’s overall well-being.

Renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Nadeem Naeem has emphasized the need for multi-pronged awareness drives to control obesity and prevent diabetes. He explained that diabetes is a leading cause of premature death, high blood pressure, heart diseases, renal failure, and even blindness. Therefore, it is crucial to take preventive measures against this potentially life-threatening condition.

Dr. Naeem highlighted the importance of regular blood screenings, particularly for individuals above the age of 35 or 40. Early detection can significantly contribute to the prevention and management of diabetes. Currently, more than 30 million Pakistanis are suffering from diabetes, making it a widespread health concern. All types of diabetes should be taken seriously as they can lead to serious complications if not properly controlled.

In addition to regular screenings, access to healthcare services is essential for identifying pre-diabetes stages and providing necessary interventions. Healthy lifestyles play a pivotal role in preventing diabetes and its associated complications. This includes focusing on fitness, engaging in outdoor activities, daily exercise, consuming healthy food, and refraining from smoking.

Diabetes has become a global health issue, posing significant challenges to economic development in many countries. What is particularly concerning is the increasing number of individuals being diagnosed with diabetes in their 20s and 30s, whereas previously, the disease was more prevalent among individuals above the age of 40. This alarming trend calls for increased awareness and proactive measures.

The impact of a diabetes diagnosis goes beyond physical health and extends to psychological well-being as well. Diabetes can affect multiple aspects of a person’s life, highlighting the importance of screening even at a younger age. To effectively manage diabetes and delay complications, equipping patients for self-care and providing holistic management by regular family doctors is essential.

Dr. Naeem also emphasized the significance of a balanced diet in controlling diabetes. This includes regulating portion sizes, incorporating healthier alternatives like brown rice instead of white rice, limiting sugary items, and including salads in one’s regular meals. A balanced diet provides positive energy and contributes to overall bodily functions.

It is crucial for individuals to prioritize their health by adopting healthy habits and seeking regular medical check-ups. Preventing obesity and diabetes requires a proactive approach that encompasses awareness, education, and lifestyle modifications. By doing so, individuals can safeguard their well-being and avoid the potentially devastating consequences of these conditions.
