Chinese-Pakistani Collaboration Introduces New Heat-Resistant Rice Variety

In a groundbreaking partnership, Longping High-Tech, a prominent Chinese agricultural company, and Guard Agricultural Research & Services (Pvt.) Limited, its Pakistani counterpart, have successfully conducted a commercial trial of a 14th hybrid rice variety. This heat-resistant rice has shown immense potential, with the capacity to yield up to 160 maund per acre.

The past few years have witnessed prolonged summers and high temperatures, which have resulted in significant damage to rice crops in Sindh and Punjab regions. Recognizing the urgent need for heat-tolerant varieties, farmers approached Longping High-Tech, a pioneer in introducing high-yield hybrid rice to Pakistan.

Collaborating with Guard, the Chinese company invested three years of research and development to produce the new variety named “LP-34.” After successful trials, LP-34 will be available for commercial cultivation from the upcoming season.

Momin Ali Malik, Executive Seed Division, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Farmers were reaching out to us, given our expertise in hybrid rice production with high yield potentials. We are proud to introduce this heat tolerant variety to address the challenges faced by farmers in Sindh and Punjab.”

A delegation comprising Chinese and Pakistani scientists, along with members of the Agricultural Journalists Association (AJA), visited the commercial trials in a village near Larkana. The crop, nearing harvest, impressed the delegation with its performance.

Di, a representative from the Chinese seed company, confirmed that the newly developed rice variety had been approved by Pakistani institutions for commercial cultivation. He highlighted that LP-34 is the 14th hybrid rice variety introduced through the Sino-Pak collaboration. Di further remarked, “Our earlier varieties have significantly increased production, raising the yield from 60-70 maunds per acre to 110 maunds per acre in Sindh and Southern Punjab. With the potential of LP-34, we anticipate even higher yields.”
