JI to Hold Lahore Rally on 16th in Support of Farmers
JI Chief Calls for Protest Rally in Solidarity with Farmers
ISLAMABAD: The Emir of Jamaat-i-Islami, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, has announced a protest rally in Lahore on May 16 to express solidarity with farmers who are currently protesting against the government’s failure to procure the fresh crop of wheat in the country.
During a press conference, the JI chief warned the Punjab provincial government against blocking the route of the rally, stating that they would be held responsible for any untoward incident on Mall Road, Lahore.
“We are planning to hold a peaceful rally in Lahore on May 16, joined by farmers. If the government tries to obstruct our way, the provincial government will bear the responsibility for any unfavorable situation,” said the JI emir. He added that if the federal government truly wants to address the farmers’ issues, it should take immediate action to prevent further protests.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman highlighted that the government had initially promised to procure the crops from the farmers, but later reneged on its commitment.
The JI leader also criticized the previous caretaker government for importing wheat, despite the expectation of a bumper crop within the country.
Furthermore, the JI chief urged the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to avoid violent protests relating to wheat flour and electricity shortages. He emphasized that both the government and citizens must refrain from providing India with an opportunity to take advantage.
In regards to a recent statement made by former caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar regarding the unveiling of facts about Form 47 (the result of recent general elections), the JI leader suggested that Mr. Kakar should be taken into protective custody for questioning.
“The statements made by Mr. Kakar pose a danger to the life of the caretaker Prime Minister, as the entire PML-N government is standing on the basis of alterations in Form 47,” he added.
It is worth mentioning that the Islamabad police recently prevented a pro-Palestinian rally organized by JI from moving towards the US Embassy. The demonstrators intended to stage a sit-in to protest against Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
