Harassment of Farmers by Millers in Srikakulam Regarding Paddy Procurement

In Srikakulam, farmers are facing difficulties in the procurement of paddy due to the harassment imposed by millers on technical grounds. These millers are imposing various conditions related to moisture and wastage, thereby extracting additional paddy from farmers under the pretext of deficiencies caused by moisture. Farmers have raised serious allegations that millers collect an extra 5 to 10 kg for every quintal bag on different pretexts.

Despite the state government’s claim of procuring all crops through Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs), brokers continue to play a significant role in the procurement of paddy from farmers. At the village level, local brokers or traders acquire paddy from farmers by obtaining their land documents and having the farmers affix their thumb impression at the local RBK. Subsequently, these local traders/middlemen transport the paddy to nearby rice mills. However, the millers are creating obstacles in procuring the paddy, causing inconvenience to both the farmers and the supply chain. Shockingly, officials from revenue, civil supplies, and agricultural departments have remained mere spectators, overlooking these issues. Consequently, long queues of paddy tractors can be observed outside rice mills.

The involvement of brokers in the procurement process raises concerns about transparency and fairness in the system. The farmers, already burdened with the challenges of agriculture, now find themselves at the mercy of millers who exploit their vulnerabilities. It is crucial for the government and relevant authorities to address these issues promptly, ensuring that farmers receive fair treatment and are protected from exploitation.

Farmers play a crucial role in ensuring food security and the well-being of the nation. Their efforts and hard work should be acknowledged and respected. Therefore, it is essential to establish a transparent and efficient procurement system that benefits the farmers and strengthens the agricultural sector as a whole.
