Middle East and Asia June 2024 Price Bulletin for Kazakhstan
The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) carefully monitors the prices of staple foods in countries that are vulnerable to food insecurity. The Price Bulletin, published for each FEWS NET country and region, offers insightful charts displaying monthly price data for the current marketing year in selected urban centers. Users can compare these current prices with both the five-year average prices, indicating seasonal trends, and the prices from the previous year.
In Central Asia, wheat stands as the most significant staple food, with rice serving as an important substitute. Within the region, Kazakhstan plays a prominent role as a net exporter of wheat. On the other hand, Pakistan is generally considered self-sufficient and only exports wheat in exceptional years, primarily to Afghanistan and other Asian nations. In Kazakhstan, the Saryagash Station serves as a crucial source market for exporting wheat to Afghanistan and neighboring countries. In Afghanistan, Kabul acts as a supply hub for the central provinces and fulfills its role as a transit point connecting the north, south, east, and west. Additionally, Jalalabad serves the eastern part of the country and acts as a cross-border market with Pakistan. Mazar-e-Sharif supplies the northern provinces and, in prosperous years, also caters to the southern provinces. Lastly, Kandahar serves the southwestern area of Afghanistan. In Pakistan, Lahore emerges as a key trading hub for regional commerce, particularly with Afghanistan.
When it comes to rice production, Pakistan takes the lead in the region, accounting for approximately 70 percent of the total output. Pakistani rice is exported to both regional and international markets, contributing significantly to the overall rice supply chain.
