Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister, has confirmed that the Indian government does not have any plans to remove the export restrictions on wheat, rice, and sugar. He also stated that importing wheat and sugar is not on the agenda.

Goyal firmly stated that there are currently no proposals to lift the export curbs on wheat, rice, and sugar. Furthermore, he emphasized that India will not be importing these commodities either. The government had imposed a ban on wheat exports in May 2022, followed by non-basmati rice in July 2023, and extended restrictions on sugar exports beyond October 2023. These measures were implemented to control the surging domestic prices.

Additionally, Goyal highlighted that India continues to fulfill its commitment of providing rice to friendly nations to meet their food security requirements. Countries such as Indonesia, Senegal, and Gambia have benefited from India’s rice exports.

It is important to note that the Indian government remains focused on stabilizing the prices of essential commodities and ensuring food security within the country. As of now, the export restrictions on wheat, rice, and sugar will continue to be in effect.
