Pakistan’s Winter Market Resounds with Lament as Egg Prices Soar to 34 Rupees
The cost of eggs in neighboring Pakistan has reached a shocking level of 34 rupees per egg, or 400 rupees for a dozen, causing concern among consumers. In comparison, a dozen eggs in the market of Kolkata, India cost around 90 rupees. This rise in egg prices is a reflection of the overall inflation in Pakistan, which has been a long-standing issue. The country has faced numerous crises, including a shortage of flour, resulting in soaring prices of essential goods. Despite government efforts to control prices, the situation has not improved.
Apart from eggs, the prices of other products have also significantly increased. The government has set the price of onions at Tk 175 per kg, but they are being sold for Tk 230 to Tk 250 per kg in the market. Similarly, chicken meat is being sold for about 600 rupees per kg. Now, eggs are being sold for 400 rupees per dozen, adding to the burden on consumers.
Not only Pakistan, but the neighboring country of Bangladesh is also experiencing rising prices. Recently, the price of eggs increased in Bangladesh, and now the price of rice has also begun to rise. This increase in rice prices has been observed in various markets, including the capital Dhaka, with prices rising by 2 to 6 taka per kg within two weeks. Despite a good yield of Aman rice this year, the production cost has escalated significantly. Traders, however, are unable to identify a specific reason for the sudden surge in rice prices during this season.
It is essential for both Pakistan and Bangladesh to address the issue of rising prices to alleviate the burden on consumers. Steps need to be taken to stabilize the market and ensure that essential commodities are affordable for the general public.
