In a bid to tackle challenges such as smog, poor air quality index, and water scarcity, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, emphasized the importance of promoting eco-friendly agricultural technology.
The UAF Vice Chancellor made these remarks while addressing the Rice Field Farmers Day organized by the Water Management Research Center at the university. During the event, the demonstration of rice harvesting on beds with Kubota combine harvesters took place, highlighting the benefits of modern farming techniques.
Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan stressed the need to shift towards modern farming practices in order to ensure food security. He also mentioned that deteriorating environmental conditions and poor air quality index have led to the prevalence of various diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to take proactive measures to promote environmentally friendly technology.
During the event, WMRC Director Dr Nadeem Akbar provided a briefing on the Resource Conservation Technique in Rice Wheat Cropping System. The use of Kubota combine harvesters allows for efficient rice harvesting from the bottom, with the remains or stubble being chopped without additional effort. This technique enables the field to be immediately prepared for wheat sowing through zero tillage, conserving water, reducing greenhouse emissions, and promoting an environmentally friendly approach.
The Rice Field Farmers Day was attended by more than 100 rice farmers, along with distinguished guests including former Vice Chancellor of Government College University (GCU) Lahore, Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah, and a 16-member Asian Development Bank team.
The event also saw the presence of Principal Officer PRP Prof Dr Jalal Arif, Chairman PBG Prof Dr Azeem Iqbal, Prof Dr Asif Kamran, Director Farm Dr Shahid Inbe Zameer, Hall Warden Dr Muhammad Tayyib, Dr Zaheer Ahmad, and others.
