Officials of the Sindh Barrage Improvement Project (SBIP) have announced that the desilting of Rice Canal has almost been completed. This update was provided during a briefing at the project site, attended by Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and other officials concerned.

The Rice Canal is an essential irrigation channel that spans across Larkana, Dadu, and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts, covering over 481,000 acres of land. It is a non-perennial canal that supplies water to growers during the Kharif season, which occurs from May to October, specifically for paddy crop cultivation. With a length of 81.6 miles and a design capacity of 13,581 cusecs, the canal plays a crucial role in supporting agricultural activities in the region.

The completion of the desilting work on the Rice Canal is a significant achievement and has been met with great satisfaction from all parties involved. Growers can now expect to receive adequate irrigation water without any hindrances, addressing the long-standing issue of inadequate supplies and blockages during the Kharif season.

The accumulation of silt over the years had severely impacted the canal’s capacity and necessitated rehabilitation and modernization efforts. The project’s feasibility study was conducted in 2013-14, and work commenced in February of last year. International bidding was conducted for the contract to desilt the canal, with work officially starting on December 11, 2023. The original completion date was set for April 30, 2024.

SBIP Director Ghulam Mohiuddin Mughal highlighted the progress of the project, noting that the work has been completed except for the desilting of specific areas. He also mentioned that additional work has been undertaken based on the request of the chief engineer of Sukkur Barrage’s right bank region at Larkana, with a planned completion date of May 15.

Restoring the canal’s designed parameters and improving flows posed a significant challenge, but the project team successfully stepped up to meet it. Dewatering pumps were utilized to dry the canal bed, while manpower and machinery were employed to address seepage and block inlets affected by silt.

The successful completion of the desilting work on the Rice Canal is a major milestone for the SBIP. It ensures the sustainable and uninterrupted supply of irrigation water to farmers, which is vital for agricultural activities in the region. Future projects aimed at further improving the canal’s infrastructure and capacity are also being considered.
