Delhi HC Dismisses PIL on Arvind Kejriwal’s Release, Imposes Fine on Petitioner
Delhi High Court Dismisses PIL for Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail, Stresses Equality Before the Law
The Delhi High Court has rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking exceptional interim bail for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in all criminal cases. In addition to dismissing the plea, the court has imposed a fine of Rs.75,000 on the petitioner.
Acting Chief Justice of Delhi, along with the bench, emphasized that the court does not have the authority to grant extraordinary interim bail to a person holding a high office in a pending criminal case.
The court further pointed out that the individual in question is currently in custody due to a court order, with the challenge now before the Supreme Court. The law applies equally to all individuals, regardless of their status.
Kejriwal’s detention in Tihar jail has been extended until April 23 by the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi. Earlier on April 9, the high court had denied Kejriwal’s request to challenge his arrest, stating that his arrest was legal due to his repeated disregard of the summons.
Another plea has been filed challenging the nine summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case related to the nullified excise policy. Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain will preside over the hearing of these petitions.
