German President Visits Sustainable Rice Project
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand’s largest rice-farming province, to support climate-smart agriculture practices. The province, along with Chiang Rai, aims to transform rice production chains towards climate-friendly agriculture as part of a Thai-German development project. During his visit, Steinmeier met with smallholder farmers at the Suan Ta Rom Demonstration Farm, which highlighted methods under the Inclusive Sustainable Rice Landscapes (ISRL) project. The ISRL project, funded by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme, aims to upscale farming practices to benefit farmers and communities. Around 45,000 farmers in Thailand are encouraged to implement climate-smart rice farming practices and technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project also focuses on teaching communities how to produce natural composts and biocontrol products, diversify crops, and practice agroforestry.
