Markfed’s Former MD Arrested in Rice Milling Scam
Former Managing Director of the Chhattisgarh State Cooperative Marketing Federation (MARKFED), Manoj Soni, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday in connection with the alleged custom rice milling scam. Soni was taken into custody and presented before the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court, which granted five days of ED custody until May 4.
The arrest took place at the Anti Corruption Bureau/Economic Offences Wing (ACB/ EOW) office in Raipur, where Soni had gone to provide his statement. The Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau/Economic Offences Wing (ACB/EOW) had previously registered an FIR in January 2024 based on a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate regarding the alleged custom rice milling scam.
According to the ED report on the custom milling case, corruption had taken place during the process of depositing rice to the state Civil Supplies Corp and the Food Corp of India by rice millers after custom milling of rice. The report states that corruption was widespread, with government officials misusing their positions and colluding with rice millers to receive undue benefits, resulting in a financial loss for the government.
