Reviving the Canal: A Remarkable Makeover
Agriculture is an essential component of Pakistan’s economy, supporting nearly half of the population. One of the key factors contributing to the success of the agricultural sector is the extensive canal system, which was established during British rule and played a crucial role in transforming Punjab into a thriving agricultural region. Over time, the arable land has expanded significantly, from 30 to 140 lac acres.
At present, the canal network irrigates around 4 million acres of land, facilitating the cultivation of vital crops such as wheat, rice, fruits, vegetables, and sugarcane. However, due to a lack of regular maintenance and cleaning, the canals are facing water scarcity issues and widespread theft. In response to this pressing concern, the provincial government has announced plans to clean over 11,000 canals in Punjab, with the initiative set to begin on December 26th. This extensive effort includes repairing edges and embankments, as well as addressing structural cracks. Additionally, stringent measures will be implemented to combat water theft and ensure the availability of water in the canal network.
To ensure the success of these endeavors, the involvement of the entire community is crucial. A broader campaign should be initiated to encourage people to refrain from discarding garbage into the canals. By adopting a comprehensive approach to reviving and maintaining the canal system, Pakistan can secure a sustainable future for its agricultural backbone.
