Chinese Hybrid Rice Harvested at Brunei Farm: Promoting Cross-Border Agricultural Collaboration
Brunei recently celebrated the harvest of a Chinese hybrid rice experimental field in a ceremony held at the Lekiun Agricultural Development Area. The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) of Brunei organized the event, showcasing the successful cultivation of a variety of rice for non-irrigation paddy farms. This project aims to develop the local paddy industry in Brunei using high-yielding hybrids from China.
The seedlings of three rice varieties were planted on December 14 last year as part of a suitability study. The study focuses on finding rice hybrids that can thrive in Brunei’s unique farming conditions, particularly in non-irrigated farms. The collaboration between the MPRT and the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center in China has paved the way for this project’s success.
Chinese Ambassador to Brunei, Xiao Jianguo, expressed his satisfaction with the recent harvest and emphasized the potential for further cooperation between China and Brunei in hybrid rice development. Ambassador Jianguo stated, “The harvest today is a good start for the two countries to deepen cooperation on hybrid rice. In the future, China will continue to strengthen cooperation with Brunei in terms of hybrid rice seeds and expert guidance, and provide more support.”
This initiative holds great promise for the development of Brunei’s rice industry. By cultivating high-yielding rice hybrids, Brunei aims to increase productivity and meet the country’s rice demand efficiently. The partnership with the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center enables Brunei to access advanced hybrid rice seeds and expert guidance, ensuring the success of this endeavor.
The MPRT, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, is dedicated to exploring suitable rice hybrids for Brunei’s unique agricultural conditions. This project aligns with Brunei’s efforts to enhance its self-sufficiency in rice production and reduce reliance on rice imports. By developing its local paddy industry, Brunei can provide its citizens with high-quality rice and contribute to its food security.
In conclusion, Brunei’s recent celebration of the hybrid rice harvest marks a significant step towards the development of its paddy industry. The successful cultivation of rice hybrids from China showcases the potential for increased productivity and self-sufficiency in rice production. With the ongoing cooperation between China and Brunei, the future of the paddy industry in Brunei looks promising.
