Chinese Hybrid Rice Successfully Harvested at Brunei Farm
Brunei Celebrates Harvest of Chinese Hybrid Rice Field
Brunei recently held a ceremony at the Lekiun Agricultural Development Area to celebrate the successful harvest of a Chinese hybrid rice experimental field. The event was organized by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) of Brunei. The field was dedicated to growing a variety of rice suitable for non-irrigation paddy farms as part of a study to develop the local paddy industry.
The project, which began on December 14 last year, involved planting seedlings of three different rice varieties. These high-yielding hybrids from China were chosen to assess their suitability for the environmental conditions in Brunei. The goal is to improve the local paddy industry by utilizing hybrid rice technology.
“The harvest today marks the beginning of a strong partnership between Brunei and China in the field of hybrid rice,” stated Chinese Ambassador Xiao Jianguo. He further expressed China’s commitment to strengthen cooperation with Brunei by providing hybrid rice seeds, expert guidance, and continued support.
The Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, under the MPRT, collaborated with the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center in China for this project. Their joint efforts aimed to identify rice hybrids that can thrive in the specific conditions of non-irrigated farms in Brunei.
This initiative is crucial for Brunei’s agricultural sector as it seeks to diversify its economy and increase self-sufficiency in rice production. By exploring the potential of hybrid rice cultivation, Brunei aims to enhance crop yields, improve quality, and reduce reliance on rice imports.
