KARACHI: The Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation–Customs, FBR has apprehended the alleged mastermind responsible for the illicit importation of significant quantities of betel nuts into Pakistan.

In line with an FIR, reliable intelligence revealed that a Karachi-based company, owned by the alleged mastermind, was engaged in importing betel nuts, a regulated item, by submitting fabricated laboratory reports to bypass import restrictions.

An extensive investigation determined that the company imported multiple shipments of betel nuts between October 2023 and January 2024, with a total value exceeding 100 metric tons. In order to facilitate the clearance of these imports, the company provided a counterfeit lab report indicating a lower level of harmful aflatoxin content, which is prohibited under import regulations.

Following the arrest of the company’s proprietor and alleged mastermind, preliminary questioning confirmed his involvement in importing betel nuts, broomsticks, spices, as well as exporting rice. During the interrogation, he confessed to maintaining contact with an Indonesian supplier named Tahir Chaudary for the purpose of importing the aforementioned items.

Authorities suspect that the accused collaborated with the clearing agency, Department of Plant Protection staff in Karachi, and other accomplices. The falsified imports violated several sections of the Customs Act, Import Policy Order, and Import and Export Control Act.

An FIR has been filed in the case, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to uncover all individuals involved in this smuggling operation, which posed serious risks to public health.
