Increase in Production of Rice, Maize, and Potatoes
Bangladesh has experienced a remarkable growth in crops production over the past decade, particularly in rice, maize, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits. This achievement is attributed to the government’s agricultural-focused policies.
During his budget speech for the fiscal year 2024-25 in Jatiya Sangsad, Finance Minister AH Mahmood Ali highlighted the significant increase in food grain production. In FY 2008-09, the total production of food grains amounted to 328.96 lakh metric tons. However, by FY 2022-23, this figure had surged by approximately 42 percent to reach 467.03 lakh metric tons.
The finance minister also mentioned the impressive growth in specific crops during this period. Maize production witnessed a staggering increase of 780 percent, while potato production grew by 98 percent. Similarly, vegetable production soared by 675 percent.
As a result of this agricultural revolution, Bangladesh has achieved remarkable rankings on a global scale. Despite being the most densely populated country in the world, Bangladesh secures the third position in rice, vegetable, and onion production internationally. Furthermore, it ranks second in jute production, fourth in tea production, and seventh in potatoes and mangoes production.
This tremendous progress in crops production not only highlights the success of the government’s agri-oriented policies but also showcases the country’s potential in the agricultural sector. With continued support and strategic initiatives, Bangladesh can further enhance its agricultural productivity and contribute to ensuring food security and economic growth.
