Engagement Session Held by KPKM with Padi and Rice Industry Stakeholders
KUALA LUMPUR: Yesterday, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) held a crucial engagement session with stakeholders in the padi and rice industry. This decision was made during the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) special meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on February 23.
In a statement released today, KPKM announced that the meeting concluded with an agreement for further studies and discussions. These will focus on important factors such as the padi purchase price, supply factors, global price of imported rice, sustainability of local rice supply, and the impact on consumers.
The statement also mentioned that all views, comments, and input gathered during the engagement session will be carefully analyzed and considered. The aim is to ensure that the interests of all parties involved in the padi and rice industry value chain are taken into account.
This comprehensive process will involve farmers, millers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. The outcome will be a new action plan for the padi and rice industry, which will be reviewed at the NACCOL meeting on March 20.
The engagement session was led by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. Attendees included representatives from various associations, such as millers, wholesalers, retailers, and restaurants. Additionally, KPKM Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and Kawalselia Padi dan Beras (KPB) Director-General Datuk Azman Mahmood were present, along with representatives from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS), the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Economy Ministry, the Plantations and Commodities Ministry, and the Rural and Regional Development Ministry. -Bernama
