Pakistan’s Chilli Growers Overcome Aflatoxin Contamination Through Innovative Biocontrol Techniques
11 November 2023, Pakistan: Pakistan, renowned for its chilli production, faces a significant agricultural challenge in the form of aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxins, produced by moulds that thrive in soil and decaying vegetation, pose a serious risk to human health and the livelihoods of chilli growers in the Sindh province. Addressing this issue, CABI in Pakistan has partnered with various organizations, including the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to develop innovative biocontrol techniques.
Understanding Aflatoxin Risks
Aflatoxins, highly poisonous mycotoxins produced by fungi, have become a critical concern for chilli growers. Collaborating with PARC, USAID, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), CABI in Pakistan launched a project focused on reducing aflatoxins in red chillies through regulatory harmonization for maximum residue limits and biopesticides. This pioneering project utilizes a unique biocontrol technology at the farm level to combat aflatoxin contamination.
Empowering Chilli Growers Through Training
As part of the project funded by USAID and USDA, CABI implemented a comprehensive training program for chilli growers in the Sindh province. In these trainings, farmers were educated on the adoption and utilization of aflatoxin biocontrol techniques. The training materials were developed in the local Sindhi language and included engaging animated videos to ensure accessibility.
Implementing Good Agricultural Practices
The training emphasized the importance of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to improve chilli cultivation. Farmers were educated on best practices for harvesting, post-harvesting handling, technical drying techniques, and regular crop monitoring to detect pests and diseases. By adopting these practices, farmers are poised to minimize aflatoxin contamination and enhance the overall quality of their chilli crops.
Impacting Local Economies and International Trade
The training not only benefits individual farmers but also has wider implications for international trade. Pakistan has faced challenges in meeting Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards set by trading countries, resulting in rejected exports due to aflatoxin contamination. By equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills, CABI aims to resolve these issues at the grassroots level, ensuring the quality and safety of chilli crops for both domestic consumption and exports.

Implementing biocontrol solutions and GAPs offers a promising future for chilli growers in Pakistan.
