Revolutionizing Agriculture in Pakistan

The Economic Survey of Pakistan (2023-24) has recently been released, providing valuable insights into the country’s economic growth. Despite facing challenges, Pakistan’s overall GDP growth is estimated to be 2.38%, surpassing expectations and enabling a small increase in per capita incomes.

The agricultural sector is a significant contributor to this growth, experiencing a commendable expansion of 6.25% – its best performance in the last twenty years. The Minister of Finance, in his pre-budget speech, acknowledged the resilience and vital role of agriculture in the economy, referring to it as the “savior” of the country’s economy. While favorable weather conditions have played a part in this growth, various changes and innovations are gradually propelling agriculture towards a higher and more sustainable growth trajectory.

Technological Advancements

One of the most exciting transformations in the sector is the increased use of technology. Modern agricultural technology has the potential to revolutionize farming and the entire value chain from “farm to fork.” Techniques such as precision land leveling, correct fertilizer applications, improved soil management, and efficient water use can significantly reduce costs and boost production.

Farmers, input suppliers, and service providers are embracing technology and coming together to share ideas and experiences. A prime example is the vibrant WhatsApp community called Pak Agri Tech, led by Saad Rahman, which has quickly become a hub for innovators and leaders in Pakistan’s agritech space. With over 300 active members, this group encompasses influential figures and companies in agricultural technology, fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and promoting sustainable farming practices. Pak Agri Tech’s website serves as an additional resource, providing insights, updates, and tools to empower its members and drive agricultural growth in Pakistan.

Sustainability and Efficiency

Agriculture in Pakistan is witnessing groundbreaking approaches to sustainability and efficiency. One notable method is the Paedar Qudratti Nizam Kashatqari (PQNK), meaning Sustainable Natural Farming System, pioneered by Asif Sharif. PQNK replicates natural processes in farming, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency. By using raised bed planting systems, PQNK demonstrates that crops, including rice, do not need to be submerged in water. This approach integrates Rice Intensification and Conservation Agriculture, optimizing plant spacing, soil health, and water usage. PQNK methods have been open-sourced, and thousands of Pakistani farmers have already adopted this system, reducing labor and input costs while improving crop yields and resilience.

Dr. Azeem Khan, former Head of the National Agriculture Research Center and ex-chairman of the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), has also made significant contributions. Dr. Azeem’s work focuses on making small farms profitable by producing select vegetables, fruits, fish, and flowers throughout the year. This approach reduces chemical usage, improves soil management, and assists farmers in entering multi-year contracts with high-end markets.

Large-Scale Corporate Farming

A recent and impactful innovation in Pakistan is the introduction of large-scale corporate farming. This approach, facilitated by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), aims to modernize and enhance agricultural productivity. The SIFC’s involvement brings substantial investment, advanced technologies, and improved management practices. Through high-efficiency irrigation systems, precision agriculture, and enhanced supply chain mechanisms, traditional farming practices are expected to undergo transformation.

These technological and organizational models play a crucial role in resource management, addressing the challenges of climate change, and increasing food production to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. However, it is worth noting that these innovations largely operate independently of traditional government systems responsible for technology generation and dissemination.

Rethinking the Government’s Role

Considering the success of private sector innovations in agriculture, it is essential to reassess the government’s role in the sector. Rather than being the primary driver, the government can focus on creating an enabling environment for these innovations. This includes providing regulatory support, infrastructure development, and facilitating access to markets.

Overall, these advancements in Pakistan’s agricultural sector are paving the way for sustainable growth, self-sufficiency, and increased exports. With technological advancements, sustainable practices, and private sector involvement, the future of agriculture in Pakistan looks promising.
