Retired Pakistani Brigadier Involved in Sunjuwan Attack Killed

Amir Hamza, a retired brigadier and former Director General of the Emergency Services Academy, who orchestrated the 2018 Sunjuwan Army Camp attack in Jammu, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen near the Lillah interchange in the Jhelum district of Pakistan’s Punjab.

The attack in 2018, which he masterminded, resulted in the deaths of six soldiers and left twelve others critically injured.

Hamza is the second Pakistani involved in the Sunjuwan attack to be killed by unknown gunmen. Last November, Khwaja Shahid, alias Mian Mujahid, the mastermind of the Sunjuwan terrorist attack and associated with the pan-Islamic terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), was found dead in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He was beheaded by some “unknown persons.”

In the past year, more than 24 of India’s most wanted individuals have been killed in Pakistan by unidentified gunmen.

Hamza, along with his wife Safia and daughter Muskan, was travelling by car to visit another daughter in Chakwal for Eid celebrations. As their vehicle slowed down near the Lillah interchange, four armed men on two motorcycles suddenly surrounded the car and opened fire.

The attackers ensured Hamza was killed before firing shots into the air and fleeing the scene. He died instantly, while his wife and 21-year-old daughter sustained injuries in the attack.

About The 2018 Sunjuwan Attack

On February 10, 2018, a suicide squad from Jaish-e-Mohammed attacked the Sunjuwan Army camp in Jammu. The assault resulted in the deaths of six soldiers and one civilian, with an additional 20 people injured, including 14 soldiers and five women and children.

The firefight that followed the incident lasted for 10 hours, leading to the elimination of three Jaish terrorists. This attack coincided with the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, convicted for his role in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. Hamza coordinated this operation in collaboration with Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The Sunjuwan attack has been described as one of the most severe since the 2016 Uri attack. One of the key planners behind this assault, Mufti Waqas, a commander in Jaish-e-Mohammed, was killed during an army operation on March 5, 2018, in Awantipora, South Kashmir. With his death, those responsible for planning and executing the Sunjuwan terror attack were eliminated.
