World Bank SARVP meets finance minister, emphasizes continued support for Pakistan
South Asia Regional Vice President (SARVP) of the World Bank, Martin Raiser, met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday. The meeting included discussions with Country Director of the World Bank Najy Benhassine and senior officers from Finance and Economic Affairs Divisions.
During the meeting, the finance minister provided an overview of Pakistan’s macro-economic situation and highlighted the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy. The minister also outlined the government’s priority reform areas, which include increasing the tax to GDP ratio, implementing SOE reforms, reducing costs in the energy sector, privatization, and human capital development.
Martin Raiser recognized Pakistan’s commitment to economic reforms and expressed the World Bank’s readiness to provide financial support and technical assistance to help the country achieve its developmental objectives. The finance minister requested that the World Bank align its country partnership framework with the government’s priority reform areas. Raiser acknowledged this request and assured that the World Bank Group will offer necessary support in implementing the government’s reform agenda, particularly in the energy sector, boosting exports, microfinance, building climate resilience, and social protection.
Both sides concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the partnership for the benefit of Pakistan’s economy and its people.
