Government sets rice and paddy procurement price for upcoming Boro season

DHAKA, April 21, 2024 (BSS) – The government has announced the procurement prices for rice and paddy in the upcoming Boro season, which is known for producing the largest amount of food grains in the country. This decision was made during a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMU) chaired by Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder.
The meeting, held in the cabinet conference room, was attended by various government officials including Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister M Tajul Islam, Agriculture Minister M Abdus Shahid, State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management M Mahibur Rahman, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu, and State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Begum Rokeya Sultana.
In addition to the procurement prices, the meeting discussed the quantities of food grains that will be procured during the upcoming season. It was decided that five lakh tonnes of paddy, 11 lakh tonnes of parboiled rice, one lakh tonnes of non-parboiled Atap rice, and 50,000 tonnes of wheat will be procured.
The procurement prices for the different types of grains have been fixed as follows: Taka 32 per kilogram (Kg) of paddy, Taka 45 per kg of par-boiled rice, Taka 44 per kg of non-parboiled rice or Atap, and Taka 34 per kg of wheat.
Furthermore, it was announced that the country-wide internal food grain procurement drive will start on May 7 and continue until August 31, 2024. This initiative aims to ensure an adequate supply of food grains throughout the country.
Compared to the previous year, the procurement prices have seen an increase. In 2023, the unit procurement price was Taka 30 for paddy, Taka 44 for parboiled rice, and Taka 35 for wheat.
The government’s decision to fix the procurement prices for rice and paddy in the upcoming Boro season is crucial for maintaining the stability of the food supply in the country. By ensuring fair prices for both farmers and consumers, the government is taking proactive steps to support the agricultural sector and promote food security.
