ISLAMABAD: The export of food groups from Pakistan has seen a significant increase during the first nine months of the current financial year (2023-24), with a growth rate of 48.17% compared to the same period last year.
Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reveals that food commodities worth $5.651 billion were exported between July and March 2023-24, recording a substantial rise from $3.814 billion in the corresponding period the previous year.
Rice exports have particularly flourished, witnessing a remarkable increase of 83.37%. More than 4.550 million tons of rice, valued at $2.930 billion, were exported during this timeframe compared to 2.939 million tons worth $1.598 billion in the same period last year. The export of fruits also grew by 17.34%, while vegetable exports saw a surge of 42.79%. The data indicates that 782,155 metric tons of fruits, valued at $265.655 million, and 906,836 metric tons of vegetables, valued at $94.896 million, were exported.
Tobacco exports experienced a rise of 19.99%, and spice exports grew by 19.90%. A total of 16,968 metric tons of tobacco, worth $61.576 million, and 29,011 metric tons of spices, valued at $87.297 million, were exported.
Oil seed and nuts exports saw a substantial surge of 131.60%, whereas sugar exports witnessed a decline of 74.63% compared to the same period last year.
The export of meat and meat products generated $386.928 million for the country from the export of approximately 93,508 metric tons, reflecting a growth rate of 28.24%.
Year-on-year, food group exports have also increased by 16.35%, rising from $588.759 million in March 2023 to $685.025 million in March 2024.
However, textile exports have slightly declined month-on-month, experiencing a decrease of 2.36% from $701.565 million in February 2024.
These figures demonstrate the significant growth and success of Pakistan’s food exports, particularly in the rice industry. With a diverse range of food commodities being exported, including fruits, vegetables, tobacco, spices, and meat products, Pakistan is making its mark in the global market.
