The strike has once again highlighted Kyiv’s concerns about the shortage of air defense capabilities.
In the aftermath of the strike, first responders bravely searched for survivors amidst the rubble while carrying away the wounded on stretchers. The distressing scene was captured in official images, showing a pool of blood forming on the ground near the site of the strikes.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has been calling on allies to provide more missiles to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses against Russian air attacks. He acknowledged that Ukraine’s air defenses were insufficient to intercept the three missiles that hit Chernigiv. Zelensky expressed his grief and concern, stating, “There are still people under the rubble. The search and rescue operation continues.”
Among the victims was a 25-year-old policewoman who was on sick leave at home. Tragically, she suffered a severe shrapnel wound during the strikes in a densely populated area of the town.
Chernigiv, located near the border with Belarus, had been partially occupied at the start of Russia’s invasion but had been spared from intense fighting for the past two years following Moscow’s army withdrawal.
According to the regional governor Vyacheslav Chaus, the strike caused significant damage to many multi-storey buildings and civilian infrastructure. In addition, dozens of vehicles were destroyed, adding to the devastation caused by the attack.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions and dangers faced by the people of Ukraine. The urgent need to strengthen the country’s air defense capabilities becomes even more apparent in the wake of such devastating strikes.
