Pakistan and Iran to Sign MOU on Livestock Quarantine and Plant Protection

Pakistan and Iran have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on livestock quarantine and plant protection. The decision was made during a meeting between Minister for Industry and Production and National Food Security, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Iranian Ambassador Dr. Reza Amiri Moghaddam.

Dr. Moghaddam expressed the Iranian President’s hope to sign the MoU during his upcoming visit to Pakistan. The aim is to enhance imports of meat, rice, and agricultural products, particularly mangoes and kinnoo, from Pakistan, as the Iranian people have a strong fondness for Pakistani kinnoo.

The ambassador emphasized Iran’s desire to strengthen bilateral relations with Pakistan across all areas of mutual interest. He highlighted the favorable stance of Iran’s top leadership toward increasing close cooperation with Pakistan, including collaboration in the fertilizer industry.

In further strengthening the ties between the two countries, the Iranian Minister of Industry invited the Pakistani minister to visit Tehran for the upcoming meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Federal Minister Rana Tanveer affirmed the strong bond between Pakistan and Iran, emphasizing the global renown of Pakistani Basmati rice. He expressed the potential for industrial cooperation between the two nations.

The Pakistani government has prioritized the development of industry and agriculture, with special attention given to these sectors. The federal minister emphasized that advancing agriculture and industry would significantly improve livelihoods and contribute to the economic restoration, which is the government’s primary concern.

Given the proximity of Pakistan and Iran, it is crucial to address the risk of disease transmission between the two countries, even with seemingly healthy animals. The MoU on livestock quarantine and plant protection aims to mitigate this potential threat.
