Smuggling of Ration Rice from Coimbatore to Kerala Foiled by Civil Supplies – CID
In a major crackdown, the Civil Supplies – CID, Pollachi unit, successfully apprehended a man involved in smuggling 2.6 tons of ration rice from Coimbatore city to Kerala. The suspect, identified as K Dhilip, 27, hailing from Mankavu in Palakkad district, was arrested during the early hours of Tuesday. Along with the arrest, the police also seized the ration rice and a goods autorickshaw used for transportation.
Acting on a tip-off, a dedicated team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police D Janani Priya from the Civil Supplies CID, reached the Walayar check post at around 5 am on Tuesday. Upon inspection, the team discovered 53 bags of ration rice, each weighing 50 kg, totaling 2,650 kg, in the goods autorickshaw.
During preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the suspect, Farooq from Ukkadam in Coimbatore, would collect ration rice from the public for a small fee. He would then pass on the rice to a person named Arul. Subsequently, Arul would distribute the ration rice in the black markets at Kanjikode in Kerala. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the police formed a special team to capture both Farooq and Arul.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of rice smuggling, which not only affects the government’s efforts in distributing essential commodities to the general population but also leads to an increase in prices in the black markets. Such illicit activities disrupt the equilibrium between supply and demand, affecting both the consumers and the economy as a whole.
To tackle this menace, it is crucial for the authorities to remain vigilant and take proactive measures. Strict monitoring at check posts and the implementation of advanced technology such as surveillance cameras can significantly aid in combating illegal activities. Additionally, raising awareness among the public about the consequences of engaging in smuggling activities can serve as a deterrent.
As the investigation progresses, it is expected that more individuals involved in the smuggling network will be apprehended, ultimately putting an end to such illicit trade. Initiatives by law enforcement agencies like Civil Supplies – CID are commendable in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the welfare of the citizens.
