The Indonesian government is taking steps to ensure food self-sufficiency by increasing the allocation of subsidized fertilizers. Yadi Sofyan Noor, chairman of the Indonesian Association of Farmers and Fishermen, emphasized that these fertilizers are crucial in achieving food security across the country.

The government has raised the quantity of subsidized fertilizers from 4.7 million tons to a staggering 9.5 million tons. This significant increase reflects the government’s commitment to support farmers and boost agricultural productivity. The total value of these fertilizers amounts to approximately 54 trillion rupiah, equivalent to around 3.4 billion U.S. Dollars.

The subsidized fertilizers cover a wide range of types, including both chemical and organic fertilizers. They are specifically designed for nine essential commodities: rice, corn, soybeans, chilies, shallots, garlic, sugar cane, coffee, and cocoa. By providing farmers with these fertilizers, the government aims to enhance agricultural output and increase food self-sufficiency.

In January, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced that Indonesia would import 3 million tons of rice this year. This decision was made to address the country’s rice deficit caused by the El Nino weather pattern.

Overall, the Indonesian government’s focus on expanding the supply of subsidized fertilizers demonstrates its dedication to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security. With these efforts in place, Indonesia is taking significant steps towards achieving self-sufficiency in food production.
