Indonesian state purchasing agency Bulog is reported to have acquired approximately 300,000 metric tons of rice in an international tender earlier this week, according to European traders. The traders estimate that 117,000 tons of rice will be sourced from Thailand, while another 108,000 tons will come from Vietnam. The remaining rice will be sourced from Pakistan and Myanmar.

The lowest price offered in the tender was $609.00 per ton cost and freight (c&f) for 21,000 tons from Vietnam, in line with previous offers. The rice is expected to arrive in Indonesia by May 31.

The Indonesian government has been increasing rice imports in an attempt to control local prices, which have risen by more than 16% since last year due to the impact of the El Nino weather phenomenon. The severe reduction in rainfall across Asia in 2023 has led to a decrease in rice output and subsequent food inflation.

In the first half of 2024, Indonesia is anticipated to have a domestic rice surplus of 1.7 million tons, compared to 3.36 million tons last year, according to an official from the Indonesian agriculture ministry.

The rice purchased in Bulog’s tender will be delivered in various sizes and consignments. The following awards were made in the tender:

  • 25,000 tons from Thailand at $616.00 per ton c&f, sold by R&S Trader
  • 26,000 tons from Thailand at $617.00 per ton c&f, sold by Ponglarp
  • 26,000 tons from Thailand at $611.50 per ton c&f, sold by Thai Capital Crops

It is preferred that the rice is packed in bags, but shipment via breakbulk ship is preferred over shipping containers.
