Government accused of neglecting farmers and Basmati rice exporters, says Cong
Delhi, March 21 (PTI) The Congress has criticized the government for its alleged failure to protect the interests of farmers and exporters of Basmati rice. The party claims that Basmati rice is being illegally grown in Pakistan and sold on the global market. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that Basmati rice farmers have been burdened with export duties and bans in recent years, leading to a significant decline in rice exports and loss of income for farmers.
Ramesh accused the Modi government of being indifferent to the plight of farmers, breeders, and exporters. He highlighted the fact that Indian Basmati rice varieties, which are protected under Indian law, are being cultivated illegally in Pakistan and sold internationally. He emphasized that this issue is causing losses for Indian farmers who invest in high-yielding seeds and fertilizers.
Ramesh further alleged that the agriculture ministry has been functioning without proper guidance since September 2023, when the then agriculture minister left to contest Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh. He criticized the government’s lack of action and asserted that the consequences of its inaction are detrimental to the nation.
The Congress Party is advocating for a comprehensive import-export policy that prioritizes the interests of farmers. Through their revolutionary #KisaanNYAY initiative, they aim to provide a stable and supportive environment for Basmati farmers. Ramesh assured that after June 2024, Indian Basmati farmers will be able to grow and sell their rice with confidence, knowing that the government is working towards their welfare.
News reports have indicated that India’s protected Basmati rice varieties are being illegally cultivated in Pakistan under different names. The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has raised concerns about this illegal practice.
