Vietnam’s Rice Exports to Senegal See Growth, But Remain Modest
Vietnam’s rice exports to Senegal, despite being one of the primary supply sources for the country, are still minimal. According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria and Senegal, Vietnam shipped 12,000 tonnes of rice to Senegal in 2023, with a turnover of 5.35 million USD. This shows a significant increase of 215% compared to the previous year. However, when considering Senegal’s total rice import of 1.3 million tonnes in the same period, Vietnam’s contribution is relatively small.

Senegal, with one of the highest per capita rice consumption rates in West Africa, imports between 900,000 and 1 million tonnes of rice annually. The country primarily imports low-priced 100% broken rice from various suppliers including India, Thailand, China, Pakistan, Uruguay, and Vietnam. Senegal not only fulfills its domestic demand for rice but also re-exports rice to neighboring countries like Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, and Gambia.

To combat rising food prices, the Senegalese government took measures at the beginning of 2022 to maintain purchasing power. These measures included abolishing VAT on imported rice and reducing import duties on broken and regular rice from 12.7% to 2.7%. With the limited supply of rice and the upcoming presidential elections in 2024, Senegal is likely to increase its import of broken rice from Asian countries.

While Vietnam’s rice exports to Senegal are not as substantial compared to other suppliers, the positive growth indicates potential for further expansion in the future. Vietnam, being one of the leading rice exporters globally, has a competitive advantage in the rice market.
