PM Shehbaz Sharif Enhances Ramazan Package to Rs12.5bn
ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, PM Shehbaz Sharif has decided to increase the quantum of the Ramazan package from Rs7.5 billion to Rs12.5 billion. The announcement comes just days after the initial announcement of the package, which aims to provide essential items to the needy at subsidized rates from all Utility Stores across the country.
The PM Office statement also mentioned that PM Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the expansion of the package’s reach. In addition to Utility Stores and the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), mobile units will now provide edible items at subsidized rates throughout the country.
To ensure maximum accessibility, the plan includes the establishment of 1,200 mobile points and 300 permanent package relief centers in the initial phase. These centers will offer a variety of food items at prices below the market rate during the holy month of Ramazan.
Furthermore, to accommodate areas without designated centers, food supplies will be transported using GPS technology-enabled trucks.
Under the Ramazan package, approximately 39.6 million people will benefit from a 30% subsidy on food items during the holy month. The subsidized items include flour, rice, pulses, ghee, sugar, syrup, and milk. The subsidy on flour will be Rs77 per kg, while the subsidy on ghee will be Rs100 per kg.
