Pakistan Emerges as the 9th Largest Potato Producer Globally
Pakistan Ranks among Top 10 Potato Producers Worldwide with an Increase in Production
Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in potato production, ranking among the top 10 producers globally. The country has witnessed a remarkable surge, with output soaring over 35% in the past three years. It is estimated that potato production will exceed eight million tons in the upcoming harvest season, further solidifying Pakistan’s position as a leading vegetable producer. This surge in production has propelled Pakistan alongside countries like China, India, and the USA in the ranks of top potato producers worldwide.
Potato Production Reaches Over Eight Million Tons
Official data shows that potatoes covered nearly 0.330 million hectares, yielding a total of 7.94 million tons in 2022-23. This represents a 1.9% increase from the previous year, surpassing the target by 31.8%. Despite these impressive numbers, Pakistan’s average potato yield remains relatively low compared to global standards. However, innovative farmers have managed to double the average yield, indicating untapped potential for increased productivity.
Punjab Province Dominates Potato Production
The bulk of potato production in Pakistan, over 95%, comes from Punjab province. The province’s core area accounts for 80% of the total production. Punjab has seen a 43% expansion in cotton production from 2020-21 to 2022-23, primarily due to increased cultivation area. This demonstrates the province’s commitment to agricultural growth and diversification.
The Potential of Potato Cultivation
Potato cultivation has emerged as a lucrative cash crop in Pakistan, following wheat, rice, and maize. Despite its economic significance, the country’s average potato yield is relatively low. However, with innovative techniques and increased focus on productivity, there is a great potential for further growth in potato cultivation.
