Indonesia Boosts Rice Stocks for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

In preparation for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, Indonesia is importing 300,000 tonnes of rice from Thailand and Pakistan to strengthen its national food reserves. This move comes as Bayu Krisnamurthi, the head of state logistics and food distributor Bulog, confirmed on March 3 that the imported rice is en route to Indonesia.

Currently, Bulog’s warehouses hold 1.3 million tonnes of rice. With the additional imports, the rice stocks will see a significant increase. Krisnamurthi emphasized that Bulog carefully evaluates domestic rice production and demand before making any rice imports. Additionally, the operations of Bulog are under close supervision by the Indonesian Audit Board (BPK) at every step.

Importing rice from Thailand and Pakistan allows Indonesia to ensure an adequate supply of rice during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, two significant occasions where rice consumption typically spikes.
