Shehbaz Sharif Re-elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan

Pakistan’s parliament has chosen Shehbaz Sharif as the country’s 24th prime minister for a second term after the February 8 national vote. Shehbaz, the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, secured 201 votes in the National Assembly, surpassing the minimum requirement for a simple majority by 32 votes.

Shehbaz, who is also the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, defeated Omer Ayub Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Imran Khan. Khan, the former prime minister who is currently in jail, received 92 votes.

In order to become prime minister, a candidate needs at least 169 votes in the 336-member house.

Shehbaz Sharif is expected to take the oath of office on Monday, officially assuming his position as prime minister.
