Bulog Announces Arrival of 300,000 Tons of Rice from Pakistan and Thailand
Indonesia Boosts National Rice Stocks with Imports from Thailand and Pakistan
Indonesia is taking steps to strengthen its national food stocks ahead of the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr by importing 300,000 tons of rice from Thailand and Pakistan. The rice is currently en route to Indonesia, according to Bayu Krisnamurthi, the president director of Bulog, a state logistics and food distributor.
With this import, Bulog’s warehouses will see an increase in rice stocks, which currently stand at 1.3 million tons. These stocks play a crucial role in stabilizing the supply and prices of rice in Indonesia.
Krisnamurthi explained that Bulog carefully assesses domestic rice production and demand before importing rice. As the sole rice importer in Indonesia, Bulog strategically conducts imports, taking into consideration factors such as harvest seasons and local rice price stability.
However, while imports are necessary, Bulog gives priority to purchasing domestic rice whenever local production is sufficient. As part of its responsibility to maintain government food reserves, Bulog ensures that imports align with actual needs and do not disrupt price stability.
It is worth noting that Bulog operates under the close supervision of the Indonesian Audit Board (BPK) at every step. This demonstrates the institution’s commitment to fulfilling its duties in the best interest of the public.
“Bulog’s rice imports also serve to guarantee the fulfillment of government food reserves,” Krisnamurthi emphasized. Bulog plays a crucial role in safeguarding national food security and ensuring an adequate supply of rice for the Indonesian people.
