Indonesia Enhances Rice Stocks Ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

Jakarta, Indonesia – In preparation for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, Indonesia has decided to import 300,000 tons of rice from Thailand and Pakistan. The purpose of this import is to strengthen the country’s national food stocks. Bayu Krisnamurthi, the president director of Bulog, the state logistics and food distributor, recently announced this decision in Jakarta.

Presently, Bulog’s warehouses hold around 1.3 million tons of rice. Importing the additional 300,000 tons will significantly increase the stock and help stabilize both the supply and prices of rice throughout the country.

Krisnamurthi explained that Bulog assesses the domestic rice production and demand before making any import decisions. Being the sole rice importer in Indonesia, Bulog imports rice gradually and strategically, taking into account factors such as harvest seasons and ensuring local price stability for rice. It is important to note that Bulog always gives priority to purchasing domestic rice whenever the local production increases.

While importing rice, Bulog is committed to maintaining the stability of rice prices and ensuring that imports are in line with the actual needs of the country. Moreover, Bulog operates under the supervision of the Indonesian Audit Board (BPK) at every step of the import process, showcasing its commitment to serving the public interest.

Krisnamurthi emphasized that Bulog’s rice imports are also crucial for fulfilling the government’s food reserves. Apart from being the national food distributor, Bulog plays a significant role in maintaining Indonesia’s food security by guaranteeing ample rice supplies for its people.

This import of rice from Thailand and Pakistan will not only bolster Indonesia’s food stocks but also serve to maintain stable rice prices across the country.
