Malaysia seeks to boost rice imports for increased domestic supply
Malaysian Consul General in Karachi Encourages Trade Relations with Pakistan
In a recent meeting with members of the Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI), Malaysian Consul General in Karachi, Herman Hardynata bin Ahmad, revealed that a free trade agreement has been established between Malaysia and Pakistan. Under this agreement, approximately 10,000 Pakistani products and 6,000 Malaysian products will benefit from reduced trade barriers.
Promoting Academic Opportunities and Tourism
During the meeting, the consul general expressed his desire to facilitate increased academic opportunities for Pakistani students in Malaysia. While several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed between the two countries, formal government-level agreements are necessary to fully support academic exchanges.
Furthermore, the consul general highlighted the untapped tourism potential in various areas of Pakistan, particularly its rich coastline in Karachi. He emphasized the importance of developing this resource to attract domestic and international tourists.
Enhancing Rice Trade
To boost bilateral trade, the consul general proposed increasing the import of Pakistani rice into Malaysia. He also suggested that Pakistani exporters utilize Malaysian ports as a transit facility for trade with other countries. By leveraging Malaysia’s strategic location, Pakistani exporters can gain easier access to global markets.
Trade Imbalance Challenges
Despite the optimistic outlook, HCCI President Adeel Siddiqui acknowledged the existence of a substantial trade imbalance between Pakistan and Malaysia. While the Pakistani government offers various guarantees to promote trade, efforts to bridge the gap must be intensified.
