Pakistan’s presidential election is set to take place on 9 March, with former president Asif Ali Zardari expected to secure the top constitutional position. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that the polling will be conducted at the National Assembly and all provincial assemblies between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Candidates can submit nomination papers by Saturday before noon. The ECP will scrutinize the papers on 4 March, and the list of validly nominated candidates will be published the same day. Retirement date is set for 6 March. Nomination papers for the election of the head of government can also be submitted by Saturday at 2 pm, and the scrutiny of papers will be completed on the same day. The newly-elected lawmakers will proceed with the election procedure for the premier. Asif Ali Zardari has been nominated for the top office by the six-party ruling alliance led by Shehbaz Sharif, while Omer Ayub Khan is the pick of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The PPP’s 68-year-old Zardari was announced as the consensus candidate after the PML-N and PPP formed the coalition.
