Record High: US Arms Exports in Fiscal 2023 Reach Unprecedented Levels
UPDATE 1: US Arms Exports Reach Record High in Fiscal 2023
According to a statement by the U.S. State Department, sales of U.S. military equipment to foreign governments surged by 16% in 2023, reaching a record-breaking $238 billion. This increase was largely driven by countries replenishing stocks sent to Ukraine and preparing for potential conflicts. The State Department emphasized that arms sales and transfers play a crucial role in U.S. foreign policy and have significant implications for regional and global security.
The approved sales for 2023 included $10 billion worth of High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Poland, $2.9 billion worth of AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-To-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) to Germany, and National Advanced Surface to Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine. These impressive figures suggest that companies like Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman will experience a surge in sales, potentially driving their stock prices higher amidst increasing global instability.
Lockheed Martin is the manufacturer of HIMARS, while RTX (formerly Raytheon) produces AMRAAM. RTX and Norway’s Kongsberg are responsible for the production of NASAMS. The projections for 2024 indicate that Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics will continue to receive orders for hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds, Patriot missile interceptors, and armored vehicles, further solidifying their market presence in the coming quarters.
Foreign governments can purchase arms from U.S. companies through two main channels: direct commercial sales or foreign military sales. Direct commercial sales involve negotiations between a company and a foreign government, while foreign military sales entail contacting a Defense Department official at the U.S. embassy. Approval from the U.S. government is required for both types of sales. In fiscal year 2023, direct military sales by U.S. companies amounted to $157.5 billion, rising from $153.6 billion in the previous fiscal year. Simultaneously, sales arranged through the U.S. government increased from $51.9 billion in 2022 to $80.9 billion in 2023.
The surge in U.S. arms exports highlights the ongoing demand for military equipment from international partners. This lucrative industry not only serves as a significant source of revenue but also bolsters U.S. influence in global security matters. The trend of increased arms sales is expected to continue in the foreseeable future, benefiting companies involved in the defense sector.
