Pakistan’s Food Exports Surged by 49.84% in First Half of Current Fiscal Year

Pakistan’s food group exports have experienced significant growth during the first half of the current financial year, increasing by 49.84% compared to the same period last year. According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the value of food commodities exported from July to December 2023 amounted to 3.481 billion dollars, compared to 2.323 billion dollars in the corresponding period of the previous year.

During this period, rice exports witnessed a substantial increase of 76.53%. Over 2.570 million tons of rice, worth 1.638 billion dollars, were exported, compared to 1.732 million tons valued at 927.918 million dollars in the same period last year.

The export of fruits also experienced growth, rising by 9.31%, while pulses saw a significant increase of 79.01%. Approximately 446,901 metric tons of fruits, valued at 171.280 million dollars, and 96 metric tons of pulses, worth 48,000 million dollars, were exported.

Tobacco exports surged by an impressive 64.92%, and spices saw a growth of 21.37%. Pakistan exported 14,239 metric tons of tobacco, worth 44.919 million dollars, and 19,500 metric tons of spices, valued at 57.125 million dollars, during the last six months of the current financial year.

Furthermore, the exports of oil seeds and nuts grew by 250.45% in the first two quarters of the current fiscal year, while sugar exports increased by 100 dollars compared to the previous year’s exports.

During the same period, Pakistan earned 363.998 million dollars from the export of approximately 225,102 metric tons of oil seeds and nuts. Additionally, about 33,102 metric tons of sugar were exported, generating 21.071 million dollars in revenue.

The export of meat and meat products raked in 239.711 million dollars as Pakistan exported around 59,310 metric tons. This represents a growth of 24.90 dollars in the exports of meat and meat preparations during the review period.

Compared to the same month in the previous year, the food group exports in December 2023 increased by 111.63 dollars. In December 2023, food commodities worth 840.819 million dollars were exported, compared to 397.307 million dollars in December of the previous year.

Overall, Pakistan’s food group exports have shown significant growth, particularly in the rice sector, with a substantial increase in exports. The country’s export market for fruits, spices, tobacco, and other food commodities has also expanded, contributing to the overall positive performance of the food group exports.
