fpcci urges agri sector to enhance cooperation with china
Pakistan has the opportunity to strengthen its agricultural and food cooperation with China, a move that can significantly boost its export contribution. This collaboration can involve focusing on niche products, partnering on climate-resilient crops and drought-resistant technology, agri-tourism, and private sector collaboration. These efforts will not only deepen ties between the two nations but also diversify exports and ensure long-term food security.
According to Rafique Suleman, the Convener of FPCCI Rice Export Committee, China and Pakistan have a strong history of cooperation in agriculture and food. This cooperation has centered around technology transfer, joint ventures, market access, and knowledge sharing. These collaborations have played a crucial role in strengthening Pakistan’s agricultural and food capacity and expanding its exports.
In the first half of the current fiscal year 2023-24, Pakistan witnessed a significant increase in agriculture and food exports. Official data shows that total exports reached $3.847 billion, a jump of 64% compared to the same period last year. This increase amounts to an absolute gain of $1.502 billion.
This growth in agri-food exports has not only boosted the overall export growth but has also helped reduce the trade deficit by 34.3%, bringing it down to $11.14 billion for the first half of the fiscal year.
One of the major contributors to this export surge is the rice industry. During the first half of FY24, Pakistan exported rice worth $1.64 billion, marking a 96% increase compared to the same period last year. Experts predict that rice exports may surpass the $3 billion mark by the end of the current fiscal year.
Rafique Suleman praised the outstanding performance of rice exports and highlighted the preference of rice buying countries for long-grain basmati and non-basmati rice from Pakistan. He also emphasized the cost-effectiveness of rice prices in Pakistan compared to its competitors.
To maximize its potential as a major rice exporter, Suleman suggested that Pakistan should invest in long-term soil health and resource management, focus on quality, technology, and marketing, and stay ahead of the competition.
Apart from rice, Pakistan’s agricultural and food exports to China hold great promise. China, being a major food importer, offers various opportunities for diversified exports beyond rice. Suleman identified several agricultural and food products that have significant export potential for Pakistan.
Overall, Pakistan has the potential to further enhance its agricultural and food cooperation with China, leading to increased export growth and solidifying its position as a major player in the global rice market.
