Expert urges development of effective irrigation strategy
Modernizing Agriculture for Profitability and Food Security
In order to make agriculture profitable and ensure food security in Pakistan, it is crucial to deliver modern trends and tangible research directly to farmers. This was emphasized by Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, during a meeting of the Punjab Agriculture Strategy Plan 2023-2033.
Various challenges are currently affecting the agricultural sector, including issues related to soil fertility, inputs, mechanization, market access, water, and availability of fertilizers. Prof. Khan highlighted the importance of adopting the recommendations of agriculture experts to address the decreasing fertility of land over time.
It is worth noting that a significant portion of agricultural land in Punjab is utilized for wheat and rice cultivation. Prof. Khan suggested that promoting effective irrigation techniques for these crops can lead to substantial water savings.
To achieve progress in the agricultural sector, Prof. Khan stressed the need for cooperation among government, private, and other institutions. He expressed concern over the challenges faced by farmers in accessing markets and inputs, resulting in insufficient profits. Additionally, fertile agricultural land being used for housing colonies and other purposes was identified as a pressing issue.
Prof. Khan proposed the implementation of an agro-ecological zone and cluster system to enhance agricultural practices in the country.
By embracing modern techniques, collaborating with various stakeholders, and addressing existing challenges, Pakistan can revitalize its agricultural industry, ensure profitability for farmers, and secure its food supply.
