September sees a 17.93 lakh tonnes drop in agri-commodities export, states APEDA
Exports of agricultural commodities, including basmati rice, experienced a significant decline in September this year, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The shipments of agri-commodities dropped from 27.94 lakh tonnes in August to 17.93 lakh tonnes in September.
In the months of April and May, agri-commodity exports reached over 33 lakh tonnes each. However, due to multiple restrictions on the export of various rice varieties, such as broken rice and non-basmati white rice, the export volume of farm commodities decreased to approximately 18 lakh tonnes.
Throughout the fiscal year 2023-24, agricultural exports totaled 27.94 lakh tonnes in August, as reported by APEDA. However, the value of farm item exports declined from Rs 18,128 crore in August to Rs 14,153 crore in September.
The majority of exports in September consisted of non-basmati products, reaching 4.25 lakh tonnes. Basmati rice exports amounted to 1.21 lakh tonnes, while fresh onions and buffalo meat exports reached 1.51 lakh tonnes and 1,21,427 tonnes, respectively.
From April to September, the total export volume of agri-commodities reached 172.27 lakh tonnes.
Various factors have contributed to the decline in the export of certain agricultural commodities this year. Prohibitions on specific rice varieties, the implementation of a minimum export price on basmati rice to support domestic supply, and efforts to control food inflation have all impacted the industry.
APEDA closely monitors the export data for 47 agricultural commodities, including meat and poultry products.
