Rs.0.6m Fines Imposed on 87 Illegal Profiteers in Groundbreaking Move

During the ongoing crackdown on illegal profiteering and hoarding, the city administration in Karachi has taken strict action against 87 shopkeepers and vendors who were found guilty of overpricing essential items. To ensure compliance with the prescribed rates set by the administration, Commissioner Karachi, Muhammad Saleem Rajput, has intensified the campaign against these illegal practices.

In an effort to enforce fair pricing, assistant commissioners from various towns and sub-divisions of Karachi conducted visits to different markets. They inspected shops selling groceries, meat, milk, poultry, vegetables, and fruits, and checked the prices of daily use items. The aim of these inspections was to curb overpricing and ensure that essential items are affordable for the general public.

The commissioner’s office received district-wise reports that outlined the fines imposed on the illegal profiteers. In District South, 13 individuals were fined a total amount of Rs83,000. In District East, fines of Rs195,000 were levied on 9 profiteers. District West saw 13 shopkeepers being fined a total of Rs33,000. In District Central, fines worth Rs155,000 were imposed on 6 illegal profiteers. Similarly, in District Malir, 34 shopkeepers involved in overpricing were fined Rs26,000. In District Korangi, fines totaling Rs100,000 were imposed on 6 shopkeepers, and in District Keamari, 6 profiteers received fines amounting to Rs10,000.

These strict actions against illegal profiteering and hoarding aim to protect the interests of consumers and ensure that essential items are available at fair prices. The city administration remains committed to cracking down on such practices to create a more transparent and consumer-friendly market.
