China’s Rice Exports Soar in 2022 to Ivory Coast Amid Indian Restrictions
China’s rice exports to the Ivory Coast have surged in the last three months due to restrictions on shipments from India. In October alone, China exported 45,000 tonnes of rice to the African country, matching the volume exported in August. This increase in exports is a result of India imposing curbs on overseas sales of rice, which are expected to continue into next year. India, the largest rice exporter, implemented these restrictions to stabilize local prices ahead of an upcoming election.
According to Indian government data, the Ivory Coast was the fourth-largest buyer of non-basmati rice from India in the year 2022-23. However, due to the curbs, the country has turned to China as its primary source for rice. Customs data shows that the Ivory Coast has only purchased rice from China in October and August of this year, with a total of 90,000 tonnes, surpassing the 63,500 tonnes imported from China in 2022. Other African nations have also increased their rice purchases from China.
In addition to the Ivory Coast, China has seen a surge in rice exports to other African countries. In October, China exported 20,000 tonnes of rice to the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking the highest monthly volume since at least July 2018. Similarly, shipments to Ghana reached 20,000 tonnes, slightly lower than the record volume of 20,500 tonnes in August.
These increased exports from China highlight the shifting dynamics in the global rice trade due to India’s export restrictions. As China fills the gap left by India, it is becoming an important supplier of rice to African nations. The curbs on Indian rice exports have also contributed to a surge in global rice prices, with an Asian benchmark reaching over $600 a ton this week.
