India’s non-basmati rice exports plummet by 57% in September due to increased duty

India, known as the world’s largest rice exporter, saw a significant decline in non-basmati rice exports for the month of September this year. The volume of exports plummeted by approximately 57%, while the value dropped by 60% compared to the same period last year. This decline is largely attributed to the various measures implemented by the Indian government.
However, the export of basmati rice paints a slightly different picture. In September 2023, basmati rice exports experienced an increase of 5.7% in volume and a notable growth of 20.5% in value compared to the same month in the previous year. This data has been sourced from multiple agencies.
The Indian government took specific steps to control and regulate the rice market. On August 26, an export duty of 20% was imposed on parboiled rice, while a Minimum Export Price (MEP) of $1,200 per tonne was established for basmati rice.
These measures have had a significant impact on the rice export landscape. While non-basmati rice exports have suffered, basmati rice remains a lucrative commodity for Indian exporters. The increase in volume and value demonstrates the demand for this premium rice variety in international markets.
