Karachi Port Trust Showcases Dynamic Port Activities
The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) demonstrated its efficiency and productivity on November 16, 2023, with a high volume of cargo ships arriving and departing. In the past 24 hours, from 0700 hours, the KPT successfully handled 90,046 tonnes of cargo, including 62,241 tonnes of imports and 27,805 tonnes of exports.
Import Cargo Breakdown
- Containerized Cargo: 9,908 tonnes
- Bulk Cargo: 322 tonnes
- Chickpeas: 901 tonnes
- DAP: 7,114 tonnes
- Wheat: 18,061 tonnes
- Oil & Liquid Cargo: 25,935 tonnes
Export Cargo Breakdown
- Containerized Cargo: 22,143 tonnes
- Bulk Cargo: 50 tonnes
- Cement: 5,612 tonnes
During this period, a total of 2,222 containers were handled, with 637 containers for import and 1,585 containers for export. Of the import containers, 313 were 20-foot containers and 162 were 40-foot containers. For exports, 620 were 20-foot containers and 224 were 40-foot containers. Empty container handling included 19 20-foot containers and 249 40-foot containers.
At the Karachi Port Trust, five ships – Safeen Prime, Maritec, Ts Ningbo, Louise Auerbach, and Ian H – berthed, and three ships – Songa Breeze, MT Mardan, and Clemens Schulte – also docked. Seven ships, namely Safeen Prime, Minerva Olympia, Gsl Elizabeth, Louise Auerbach, Vancouver, Ian H, and Songa Breeze, set sail from the port.
Meanwhile, at Port Qasim Authority (PQA) berths, twelve ships were in operation in the past 24 hours, with seven ships departing on Thursday morning. The overall cargo throughput at PQA reached 125,367 tonnes, including 70,630 tonnes of imports and 54,737 tonnes of exports. This included containerized cargo carried in 3,239 containers (1,430 TEUs imports and 1,581 TEUs exports).
Currently, ten ships are positioned at the Outer Anchorage of Port Qasim. The bulk cargo carrier Lucky River is expected to berth at MW-1 to load 15,000 tonnes of rice on Thursday, November 16, 2023. These port activities highlight the strength of Pakistan’s maritime trade and its crucial role in the global supply chain.
