Pakistani entrepreneurs explore agricultural market at China International Import Expo
Pakistan Emerges as a Top Rice Exporter to China in 2022
Pakistan has secured a position among the top ten grain and product exporters to China in 2022, with a total value of $456 million. This figure represents an impressive 14.12% year-on-year growth, according to the 2023 China Import Food Report released at the China Import Food Summit during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.
Muhammad Omair, a prominent sesame and rice dealer from Pakistan, expressed his enthusiasm about China as a crucial market. Omair, who was attending the CIIE for the first time, expressed amazement at the vibrant consumption market in China. His company alone has already exported over 150 containers of sesame to China this year. Omair aims to further expand his business by setting up an exhibition stand at CIIE. He highlighted that Pakistan benefits from cheap freight, competitive prices, and high-quality products, which are all facilitated by the bilateral free trade agreement between the two countries. In particular, the high oil content in sesame makes it increasingly popular among Chinese oil extraction companies.
Pakistan’s export of sesame to China has significantly grown in the first three quarters of this year, reaching a value of $56,446,268. This represents a remarkable 41% growth compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from China’s General Administration of Customs. Additionally, broken rice, primarily used for animal feed, has also experienced a surge in demand in China. Muhammad Omair revealed that despite challenges such as floods, they managed to export between 70-200 containers of broken rice to China each month.
China’s General Administration of Customs has reported a 20% increase in imports of broken rice from Pakistan. Muhammad Omair emphasized that the offline organization of CIIE amid the pandemic presents lucrative matchmaking opportunities for Pakistani and other international businesses to tap into the vast and open market in China.
With its impressive growth as an exporter to China and the favorable conditions for trade, Pakistan is making significant strides in the rice industry. The country’s reputation as a reliable supplier is further reinforced by its commitment to providing high-quality products at competitive prices.
